Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and Baxter State Park North End
My nephew and his son visited from out of state this weekend so we showed them around Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument (KWW) and Baxter.
We spent Saturday at KWW, starting with a hike on the Deasey Pond Trail. The 1.4 mile trail leads to a wooden platform overlooking Deasey Pond. We observed a kingfisher dive and catch a fish while there.
Our next stop was the short but scenic Lynx Pond Trail. The 0.4 mile walk leads to an overlook at Lynx Pond.
We next walked a little under a mile on the IAT from the Loop Road to the Katahdin Brook Lean-to.
We spent the afternoon fishing the Seboeis River and eating foil packet meals over a campfire at the Lunksoos Campground before heading off to the Mount Chase Lodge. After checking in, we drove north to Scraggly Lake Road where we watched a cow moose walking along the road. After watching it for a while, we headed back to the lodge, spotting a second moose along the road on our way back
Our first stop Sunday morning was Burnt Mountain in northeast Baxter State Park. On our way to the trailhead we spotted our third moose of the trip, a large bull in the woods next to Park Tote Road. The 2.6 mile Burnt Mountain Trail ascends 761 feet to its wooded summit. A short distance after the summit, a rock ledge affords southernly views of several remote untrailed mountains.
Our next stop was the one mile South Branch Falls Trail, which leads to a small but beautiful waterfalls.
We finished the trip with a 2 1/4 mile canoe trip on Trout Brook.
Here is a map of our activity.
